Bot is not removing spam — Telm troubleshooting

Spam still getting through in your Telegram group? Here are the four common reasons Telm is not removing messages and how to fix each one in minutes.

In short

If Telm is not deleting spam, it is almost always one of four things: Monitoring Mode is still on, the bot is missing admin rights, the sender is an admin (admins are never moderated), or protection is switched off. Walk the checklist below and you will spot it fast.

First, check anti-spam protection is on for the group.

11. Monitoring Mode is still on

This is the number one reason. Every new group starts in Monitoring Mode: the bot watches and logs exactly what it would do, but it does not delete anything or punish anyone yet. It is a safety net so you can see the bot is accurate before it acts.

While Monitoring Mode is on, your journal fills with entries like *would remove* — but the spam stays visible in the chat. That is expected, not a bug.

  • Open the group in your dashboard and check the protection status at the top.
  • If it says the group is in monitoring or observe mode, that is why nothing is being removed.
  • When the journal looks accurate, turn Monitoring Mode off to switch on real enforcement.
Not sure whether this is you? Read Monitoring Mode explained — it shows exactly what the journal looks like before and after enforcement is on.

22. The bot is missing admin rights

To delete a message or restrict a member, Telegram requires the bot to be an administrator with the matching permissions. Without them the bot can read the chat but simply cannot act — Telegram blocks the delete.

This often happens after someone edits the bot admin role, or when the bot was added as a normal member during setup.

  • In Telegram, open the group, go to Administrators and find @telmcom_bot.
  • Make sure Delete messages is enabled — without it, spam cannot be removed.
  • Make sure Ban users is enabled — without it, the bot cannot mute or ban repeat offenders.
  • Save, then send a test message to confirm moderation now works.
If the bot admin role gets removed or downgraded, protection silently stops. The dashboard flags this, but it is worth a quick check whenever spam suddenly slips through.

33. The sender is an admin or whitelisted

By design, Telm never moderates group administrators, anonymous admins, or members you have added to the whitelist. Silently deleting an admin announcement or pinned post would be unacceptable, so these users are always exempt.

So if the message that looks like spam came from an admin account, the bot leaves it alone on purpose — even with everything else configured correctly.

  • Check who actually sent the message — is that account an admin in the group?
  • If a spammer somehow holds an admin title, remove their admin rights and the bot will start moderating them.
  • Review your whitelist in the group settings and remove anyone who should not be exempt.

44. Protection is switched off or too lenient

If enforcement is on and rights are correct but a specific type of spam still gets through, the relevant detector may be disabled or set too permissively for your group.

  • Open the group settings in the dashboard and confirm anti-spam protection is enabled.
  • Check that the protection preset or individual detectors cover the kind of content you are seeing.
  • If a real spam message was missed, report it from the journal so the system learns from it.
New members are the biggest spam risk. Make sure new-member checks are active so first-time posters are screened more strictly than trusted regulars.
